Underground Nights

UG2aField & Mullinger’s Underground Nights was presented by James Mullinger, a comedian and feminist living in Canada, and Paul Field, a vinyl-hoarder in the south of England. By all accounts, they shouldn’t be friends and yet they are united by their shared interests in genre and cult films and vinyl records. They first appeared on a podcast together when they professed their love for Danny Dyer.

In each episode of Underground Nights, James and Paul took a look at their favourite cult movies that may have slipped under your radar, some of the most popular indie horror film makers from Rob Zombie to the Soska sisters, as well as discussing the burgeoning film scene in James’s adopted home, Canada.

JAMES MULLINGER worked for GQ Magazine for 15 years and is the co-author of book The Films Of Danny Dyer which remarkably received three stars from Empire magazine. More than most of Danny’s films! A lifelong Troma fan, he made his first fanzine about the B-movie film company aged 14. He believes he has the most comprehensive collection of Troma movies on VHS anywhere in the world. Also one of the hardest working stand ups in the UK, he moved to Atlantic Canada last year and has already been nominated for a Canadian Comedy Award for Best Live Solo Show and a Just For Laughs Award for Best Comedy Show. A British budget movie had been made about his life with James Buckley playing Mullinger as well as Jimmy Carr, Gilbert Gottfried, MyAnna Buring, Vas Blackwood, Norman Pace, Kevin Eldon and Mark Heap.

In 2012, Mullinger hosted the world’s first funny film review show ‘Movie Kingdom’ on TV channel DMAX which saw him riffing with Judd Apatow, Simon Pegg, Robin Williams and his all time hero Jerry Seinfeld. He also conducted hilarious interviews with A-list Hollywood stars such as Daniel Craig, George Clooney, Tom Cruise, Robert Downey Jnr, Cameron Diaz and many more. The aim was always to make them laugh and he rarely failed. But when he did (most famously with a miserable Anne Hathaway), it was even funnier! This led to a web series for Comedy Central which saw him appearing with Seinfeld again as well as Amy Schumer, Lewis Black, Jim Jefferies and Gina Yashere

He is also the Comedy Editor for British GQ magazine writing jokes and conceiving, writing, producing and directing high concept photo shoots and short films with the likes of Paul Rudd, Chris Rock, Garry Shandling, Owen Wilson, Jerry Seinfeld, Ricky Gervais and Julia Louis Dreyfus to name but a few. Mullinger is also a writer and has interviewed Jerry Seinfeld, Bryan Forbes, Stephen Merchant, Bobcat Goldthwait, Rachel Weisz, Scarlett Johansson and hundreds more personalities.

PAUL FIELD is the bloke who swears a lot on the Failed Critics Podcast, has watched all of Danny Dyer’s films, and was bunged a few quid to slate United Passions in the Daily Mirror.
